APPEAL LAUNCHED IN BUSH TORTURE CASE

Vancouver , B.C., Canada The Canadian-based legal group Lawyers Against the War--LAW filed appeal papers this week challenging the dismissal of torture charges against American President George W. Bush. The case will be heard in the British Columbia Court of Appeal later this year.

Geneva Switzerland The United States government practice of extraordinary renditions is a violation of international laws against torture that is resulting in crimes against humanity, according to a complaint filed November 23^rd, 2005 with the United Nations Commission on Human Rights by internationally recognized experts on international humanitarian law.

After a full day's hearing on November 25^th 2005 Mme. Justice Deborah Satanove of the British Columbia Supreme Court reserved judgment on another government bid to stop Canadian proceedings against George W. Bush for torture.

Lawyers against the War--LAW learned, on November 17 2004 that George W. Bush was coming to Canada on or about November 30 2004. Between November 17, 2004 and November 30, 2004, Lawyers against the War wrote to various ministers of the Crown including the Prime Minister and the Attorney General of Canada advising of the fact that George W. Bush stood accused by credible and knowledgeable groups and individuals throughout the world of the most grave crimes known to law including torture and therefore ought, by law, to be denied entry to Canada.

Today in Vancouver, Lawyers Against the War filed torture charges against George W. Bush under the Canadian Criminal Code.

The charges were laid by Gail Davidson, co-chair of Lawyers against the War--LAW, under provisions enacted pursuant to the U.N. Torture Convention, ratified by both Canada and the United States.
